Parrett & Axe CE VA Primary School

Parrett & Axe CE VA Primary School

Community

The original Mosterton School first opened its doors in 1876, with our current school building welcoming pupils in 1975.

Our school serves the three villages of Mosterton, South Perrott, and Chedington, nestled in the beautiful north-west corner of Dorset, right on the Somerset border. The county town of Dorchester is just a 30-minute drive away, with Beaminster three miles to the south and the stunning Jurassic Coast another six miles beyond. The nearest mainline railway station is conveniently located just two miles away in Crewkerne.

Mosterton is a vibrant village with a population of around 730. Surrounded by rolling countryside, it boasts an excellent village store, a welcoming inn, a church, and a busy village hall that hosts a variety of clubs and community activities.

South Perrott is a picturesque village rich in character, featuring many listed buildings. It lies in the scenic valley of the River Parrett, along the well-loved Parrett Trail, and is home to around 310 residents. The village has a church, an inn, and its own village hall.

Chedington is a historic estate village perched on a hillside with a population of about 130. It has a village hall, an inn, and is the source of both the Parrett and Axe rivers—after which our school is proudly named.

All three villages are thriving, close-knit communities that are incredibly supportive of our school and its activities. Many of our pupils come from these villages, but we also welcome children from further afield.

 Mosterton Preschool

Parrett and axe have strong links with Mosterton Preschool, which is located next door to the school.

The pre-school was established in 1981 by a small number of parents from Mosterton village for the local children and have grown to a charity run business which serves families from the local villages and towns surrounding Mosterton.

The Pre-School caters for children 2 - 4 years old. They pride themselves on a welcoming, family feel within our community. They offer the children and families a high quality learning environment which develops children using their own interests and within their individual development rates.
