Curriculum Statement
1. Introduction
The Department for Education introduced a new framework for the National Curriculum at Key Stages 1 and 2 in September 2014. This framework sets out statutory requirements for schools across England and ensures a consistent and high-quality education for all pupils.
2. Our Curriculum
At Parrett and Axe Primary School, we are committed to delivering a broad and balanced curriculum that supports the spiritual, moral, social, cultural, mental, and physical development of every pupil. Our curriculum is designed to prepare pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities, and experiences of later life.
We are proud to provide:
-
A daily act of collective worship.
-
Religious Education for all pupils.
-
Personal, Social, Health, and Economic (PSHE) Education as part of every child’s learning experience.
3. The National Curriculum
The National Curriculum sets out the core knowledge that pupils should acquire during their time in primary education. At Parrett and Axe, our teachers use this framework to design engaging, stimulating lessons that develop pupils’ knowledge, understanding, and skills across all areas of learning.
The Secretary of State for Education has published Programmes of Study for each subject, detailing the content, skills, and processes to be taught at every Key Stage. Teachers at our school have the flexibility to:
-
Organise the school day (see attached class timetables).
-
Plan and deliver the content of the Programmes of Study (see attached long-term plans).
Compulsory Subjects:
-
Core Subjects: English, Mathematics, Science
-
Foundation Subjects: Art & Design, Computing, Design & Technology, Geography, History, Music, Physical Education
-
Modern Foreign Language: French (compulsory at Key Stage 2)
-
Religious Education: taught in both Key Stages
4. Inclusion
We have high expectations for every child. Teachers use ongoing assessment to set ambitious targets for individuals and year groups, ensuring that all pupils can achieve success. Lessons are carefully planned to remove barriers to learning, and potential areas of difficulty are identified and addressed at the outset of every new unit of work.
5. Numeracy and Mathematics
Mathematical fluency is developed across the entire curriculum. Teachers provide meaningful opportunities for pupils to apply and deepen their numeracy skills in a range of subjects, helping them to gain confidence and competence in mathematical thinking.
6. Language and Literacy
Language and literacy underpin all areas of learning. Teachers develop pupils’ skills in:
-
Spoken Language: Encouraging pupils to speak clearly, confidently, and in Standard English.
-
Reading: Building fluency, comprehension, and a love of reading across the curriculum.
-
Writing: Supporting pupils to express ideas effectively in every subject.
-
Vocabulary: Systematically developing pupils’ subject-specific language, including precise mathematical and scientific terms.
We believe that mastery of the English language is essential for success across all subjects, and we are committed to ensuring every child becomes a confident communicator, reader, and writer.
