Durdle Door Class Explore World War I at Hooke Court
Durdle Door Class enjoyed a memorable and immersive history experience this week during their visit to Hooke Court, where they stepped back in time to discover what life was like for soldiers in the trenches during the First World War.
The day began with pupils being “recruited” into the British Army. They were issued replica WWI uniforms and learned about the roles, ranks and responsibilities of soldiers during the conflict. After enlistment, the children took part in marching drills and discipline routines that would have been part of every recruit’s training more than a century ago.
One of the highlights of the trip was the opportunity to explore Hooke Court’s carefully reconstructed trenches. Pupils were able to walk through communication trenches, see dugouts and shelters, and imagine the day-to-day challenges faced by soldiers on the Western Front. Staff guided the children through the realities of trench life — from the cramped conditions to the dangers of enemy fire, mud, rationing and the constant need for teamwork.
The children also handled replica artefacts, including helmets, mess tins and medical equipment, giving them a hands-on understanding of how soldiers lived, ate and protected themselves. A wartime “trench lunch” gave everyone a taste (literally!) of life at the front.
Throughout the day, pupils asked thoughtful questions and showed great empathy as they learned about the experiences of soldiers and the significance of remembrance. The visit provided a powerful link to their history topic and helped deepen their understanding of why the First World War remains such an important part of our shared history.
We are incredibly proud of Durdle Door Class for their enthusiasm, respect and curiosity.
A huge thank-you to the staff and the Hooke Court team for creating such an enriching learning experience.
