ELSA
At Parrett & Axe CE VA Primary School, we value not only your child’s education but also their well-being. We understand that children learn best and are happiest when their emotional needs are met.
What is Emotional Literacy?
Emotional literacy is the ability to:
-
Understand and manage our own feelings.
-
Recognise and respond to the emotions of others.
-
Build positive relationships and develop high self-esteem.
ELSA Support
Our Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA) offers help with a wide range of emotional needs, including:
-
Recognising and managing emotions
-
Building self-esteem
-
Developing social and friendship skills
-
Anger management
-
Coping with loss and bereavement
We know that, at times, all of us face challenges—and children are no exception. Our ELSA support provides a safe and nurturing space to help pupils through these difficult periods.
How Sessions Work
Sessions usually last 25–45 minutes once a week. Most are one-to-one, but small group sessions are offered when beneficial. Activities are designed to be engaging and supportive, using role play, stories, puppets, games, arts, and crafts to help children express themselves and develop resilience.
The aim of ELSA support is not to “fix” problems, but to provide emotional support, a listening ear, and a calm, reflective space where children feel safe to share their thoughts and feelings. For children with complex or long-term needs, we work closely with parents and external agencies to ensure they receive the right specialist support.
The HYGGE Room
In the 2024/25 academic year, we were awarded a grant to refurbish our ELSA room. The result is our newly named HYGGE Room—a warm, calming, and welcoming space that children love. This dedicated environment helps them feel comfortable, secure, and ready to talk.
