Our British Values
At Parrett & Axe, we believe that our pupils should leave school not only with strong academic skills, but also as well-rounded, responsible members of society. As a Church of England school with a strong Christian ethos, we embed the fundamental British values throughout school life. These values help to support our core values: Courage, Respect, Equality and Kindness.
Below are the ways in which we promote British Values in our school:
Democracy
-
Pupils have a voice through our house system (Courage, Respect, Equality, Kindness): pupils earn house points, and house results are shared in our weekly Celebration Assembly.
-
The school encourages involvement in decision making—staff, governors and pupils are all involved in making school life better.
Rule of Law
-
We have a clear behaviour policy that is understood by pupils, staff, and parents. Everyone knows what is expected of them.
-
The concept that rules are there to keep us safe and help learning is reinforced daily. Pupils are taught to see that rules in school mirror laws in society.
Individual Liberty
-
Pupils are encouraged to make safe choices and take responsibility for their behaviour. We support them to develop confidence and independence.
-
Pupils have opportunities to choose, for example extra-curricular clubs, how they participate in school life, and leadership roles such as sports ambassadors.
Mutual Respect
-
Respect is one of our core values, and it underpins interactions at all levels: between pupils, between pupils and staff, and in the wider community.
-
We aim to nurture a caring, supportive, and trusting environment where people—whatever their background—feel valued.
Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs
-
As a Church of England school, our Christian faith is central, but we also teach pupils about other beliefs and faiths, celebrating diversity and helping pupils to understand and respect others.
-
Pupils learn about different customs, religions, and communities—through assemblies, RE lessons, visitors, and our links with the local community.
How These Values Are Embedded
-
Our Christian ethos (e.g. “Love your neighbour as yourself” from Luke 10 vs 27) is aligned with and supports these values.
-
They are woven into everything—our core values, our aims, our behaviour policy and how we treat each other.
-
School routines such as assemblies, celebration of achievements, and our house system reinforce them regularly.
